Celebrate 50+ years of Civil Rights history
In full view of the now infamous Edmund Pettus Bridge, the site where our ancestors and Civil Rights heroes were so violently beaten, trampled and abused, Elders’ House serves as a repository and archive for the history in the ongoing struggle for
an education of liberation for people of African ancestry.

Elders’ House: The Elders Gift to Our Children is dedicated to preserving the stories, accomplishments, and achievements of Africans and African American people so that the richness of our history and the fullness of our legacy can be passed on to our children.

Elders’ House will house books, films, African art, oral histories, personal papers, family collection, and consist of published
and unpublished material. Here we will establish a place where our research and successful models
can be shared with our community and our institutions.

THE VISION
In immediate response, Queen Elders
Dr. Adelaide Sanford and Dr. Thelma Adair convened a small group of concerned and committed individuals to assist them in this
task. By year’s end, they formed a group
named The Griots’ Collective. The Collective, identified and purchased an historic, two-story
property in downtown Selma on the banks of the Alabama River. The Griots’ Collective named it
Elders’ House: The Elders' Gift to the Children.

THE RESPONSE
In March of 2010, at the annual
Bridge –Crossing Jubilee in Selma, Alabama, which commemorates the anniversary of
Bloody Sunday, and African-Americans’
successful struggle for the right to vote, international heroine Winnie Mandela issued
a challenge. Her challenge to us was that we should own land and property in Selma, so that we could document and preserve the legacy of our valiant struggle for voting rights, civil rights and human rights in
the United States.
